Abstract

This research was motivated by the low ability of fourth-grade students at SDN 003 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam in identifying the main ideas in narrative writing. The goal of this study was to improve students’ ability to identify main ideas in narrative texts through the DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) strategy, implemented over a period of one month. The research was conducted at SDN 003 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam, involving 20 fourth-grade students. This classroom action research began in early September 2014. The research instruments consisted of teacher and student activity sheets and achievement tests. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the ability of fourth-grade students at SDN 003 Pagaran Tapah Darussalam to identify main ideas can be improved through the DRTA strategy. This improvement is evident from the increase in students’ ability from before the DRTA strategy was implemented to the second cycle of the second meeting. Preliminary data showed an average student score of 63. In terms of classical completeness, only 30% of students (6 students) achieved the minimum score of 65 (according to the KKM standard). In the first cycle, during the first meeting, the class average increased to 65.3, with completeness rising to 50% (10 students). At the second meeting, the average increased again to 69.5, with 60% completeness (12 students). In the second cycle, the first meeting showed an average score increase to 75, with 80% completeness (16 students). At the second meeting, the average score further increased to 80.5, and classical completeness reached 100% (all 20 students achieving the minimum requirement). Overall, students’ ability improved significantly from the initial test through the fourth meeting, showing an increase of 20%. Thus, this study was successful.
